It is one of the most reputed institution of Greece, in the field of technology, and has contributed unceasingly to the countrys scientific, technical and economic development, it is founded in 1836,in Greece it is popularly called In Greek, NTUA is called the "Ethnicon Metsovion Polytechnion" which stands for National Metsovion Polytechnic. It was named "Metsovion" to honor the donors and benefactors Nikolaos Stournaris, Eleni Tositsa, Michail Tositsas and Georgios Averof, all from Metsovo, a small town in the region of Epirus, who made substantial donations in the last half of the 19th century. It has its ranking 338th in the world, 116th in the European Union and 3rd in Greece by the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities website.
NTUA is divided into nine academic schools, eight being for the engineering disciplines, including architecture, and one for applied sciences such as mathematics and physics. Apart from this Undergraduate studies have a duration of five years. The university comprises about 700 of academic staff, 140 scientific assistants and 260 administrative and technical staff. It also has about 8,500 undergraduates and about 1,500 postgraduate students. It conducts its world class research Scientific research in NTUA is funded by both the public and private sectors, as well as by European Union sources in which Research Committee manages and controls the budget of research activities, withholding a 15% percentage from the budget of each research program. This percentage is allocated to a variety of activities, among which the support of undergraduate and postgraduate studies or the award of scholarships to both graduate and postgraduate students.
